Community Responsibility – encouraging collaboration and individual initiative to improve health care access.

We are responsible, as community members, to both directly expand availability of care and encourage community participation in innovative programs that assist people to gain access to health care services.  With improved health, individuals have the opportunity to develop increased personal responsibility and independence as productive residents of our community.

Access to Health Care Services is a Necessity – fostering availability of services essential to good health.

Health services are essential to establishing and maintaining health, and preventing injury and untimely death.  These services need to be available to all people regardless of ability to pay.

Respect and Dignity – honoring the value and uniqueness of each person.

All persons deserve to be treated with dignity and acknowledged as having intrinsic worth separate from any financial or social status.  Differences among individuals are acknowledged and honored.  We model a spirit of kindness and integrity to others and ourselves.

Excellence – committing to quality, caring and sensitivity.

Services and programs are designed and delivered based on the highest standards in all aspects – clinical, support and personal.  All activities reflect the attributes of esteem toward others, emphasizing compassion, concern and sensitivity for all.

Stewardship – utilizing resources prudently and creatively generating support across the community.

We are responsible for the wise use of resources and are committed to actively seeking resources and fostering support to meet future needs as well.

A Brief History of the Traverse Health Clinic

Over more than 40 years, Traverse Health has evolved from an episodic free community clinic into one of the strongest health care homes in the region.

In 1975, the organization was founded when a small group of generous physicians began volunteering their services to people who could not afford to pay. Originally known as the “Community Health Clinic,” it expanded over decades as many more practitioners became involved, all equally passionate about community health.

As demand for services grew, the clinic developed into much more than a walk-in acute care clinic. In 2005, it merged with the Grand Traverse Regional Health Care Coalition to provide a referral network including approximately 400 physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, podiatrists, optometrists, hospitals, clinics, and organizations. The organization then became known as Traverse Health Clinic and Coalition and the flagship program was called the Coalition Health Access Program (CHAP). Thanks to a generous and increasing support of the mission in the community, the clinic continued to expand programs and staff and after a few years simplified its name to Traverse Health Clinic.

As the healthcare landscape evolves, we evolve with it, always keeping an eye on the future. Because the Affordable Care Act (ACA) has provided Americans more access to care than ever before, CHAP is no longer needed. As we move forward, we continue to focus on providing high quality care to the region while still remaining dedicated to the large number of people who fall through the healthcare cracks and are detrimentally uninsured or underinsured.

Accepting Healthy Michigan Plan, Medicare, Medicaid, and private insurance, as well as offering a sliding scale for the uninsured, we remain true to our roots as a strong community safety net and will never turn anyone away because of inability to pay.
